first_img Michel Platini Michel Platini has taken his appeal against his ban from football to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.CAS announced on Wednesday morning that the Frenchman was challenging the suspension from football at a national and international level, which last week was reduced from eight years to six by FIFA’s Appeal Committee.Platini and Sepp Blatter were punished in December over a 2million Swiss francs (£1.3million) “disloyal payment” made to the Frenchman by the former FIFA president. They were given eight-year suspensions which were reduced by two years in recognition of their services to the game, but both deny any wrongdoing and neither is satisfied by the appeal verdict.Platini reacted to an “insulting” and “shameful” decision, by saying it was designed to prevent him from challenging for the FIFA presidency, but told L’Equipe last Thursday: “I’m not going to commit suicide.”In a statement on Wednesday, CAS said: “Michel Platini has filed an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the decision issued by the FIFA Appeal Committee on 24 February 2016.“In appealing to the CAS, Michel Platini seeks to annul the decisions taken by the Adjudicatory Chamber of the FIFA Ethics Committee and by the FIFA Appeal Committee which lead to him being declared ineligible to take part in football-related activity at national and international level for six years.“A CAS arbitration procedure is in progress. First, the parties will exchange written submissions and a panel of three arbitrators will be constituted. The Panel will then issue directions with respect to the holding of a hearing. Following the hearing, the Panel will deliberate and on a later date, it will issue a decision in the form of an Arbitral Award.”Platini’s suspension ruled him out of the race to replace Blatter at the head of FIFA – a pursuit which was won by Gianni Infantino.Speaking about Platini last week, Blatter told French radio station RTL: “For a certain time, I’ve seen that there is a kind of conspiracy at FIFA, firstly against Michel Platini, so that he doesn’t become president of FIFA. I find this sad.” 1last_img read more

first_imgBABY STEPS WITH ÁINE: Hi Everyone, I hope you’re all well and ready for a fun-filled weekend. This week I’ll be talking about the fourth trimester. This is a phrase used to describe those first three months with a new-born. For Will and I, those months of parenthood were an absolute rollercoaster of emotions. This is something we weren’t entirely prepared for. After 9 long months of pregnancy we were only focusing on the finish line. Meeting Ava for the very first time and embracing all the happiness that went with it.Little did we know how many obstacles went alongside the joy and excitement of having a new-born.Here’s my tips for you: DO THINGS YOUR WAY:You’ll get loads of advice as a new parent. By all means take it. After all, this is all a very new experience and you’ll appreciate all the help you get. But remember, all babies are different and what works for other parents mightn’t work for you. You’ll probably have some wishes in mind already. We were adamant we would never use a dummy. We weren’t going to fall into the trap of rocking Ava to sleep. And we definitely weren’t going to co-sleep. Turns out, we’ve done all three. You just need to do what suits you and your baby.Surprisingly, there are people who will frown at your decisions. Don’t let that get to you. Does it matter if you breastfeed or formula-feed? Does it matter if you use Waterwipes or baby wipes from the pound shop? Does it matter if you use calpol or herbal remedies to relieve their pain?Comments like ‘you’re making a rod for your own back’ or ‘He/she is spoilt’ may become familiar to you. Take them with a pinch of salt. If your new-born needs cuddled to sleep, do it. They are not spoilt, they are being loved.Trust your instincts and the decisions you make. You know your baby better than anyone. Parent the way that works for your family, not for everyone else.2. MAKE FRIENDS WITH OTHER PARENTS This one can be tough, but it is extremely important.Your friends will always be there and they will be more supportive than ever. However, if you are the first of your friends to have a baby, it is nice to have a network of people who are in the same boat.Maternity leave is amazing but it can be lonely at times. Especially when your other half returns to work and if your families don’t live nearby.Having mum friends allows you to get out and about, share tips and tricks or just get some adult conversation to keep you sane. Your little ones can bond too which is such a lovely thing. I found local baby groups the easiest way to meet new mums. Often we’re all too shy to initiate meetups outside those classes. Just go for it. You’ll be so glad you did.3. IT’S OKAY TO ASK FOR HELPNobody is expecting you to be an expert from day one. You’re going to have good and bad parenting days.Don’t be fooled by the perfect, happy parenting lives people portray on social media. We’re all guilty of it. Nobody wants to share photos of their narky, upset babies therefore you will rarely see this side of parenting online. But believe me, you’ll have those days. And when they come along, it’s okay to ask for help. There were many times I cried down the phone to my mum looking for advice (mainly on how to get Ava to sleep!!)Parenting can be stressful at times. There are many online forums that offer great help and guidance. Your midwife and health visitor are always there too.You might just need an hour to yourself, to catch up on some sleep or enjoy some quality time with your partner. Your friends and family will love getting some new-born cuddles, so don’t be afraid to ask them to babysit.Remember that the ‘fourth trimester’ will pass. It gets easier but, time goes too quick so embrace those moments while you have them. You will make amazing parents! Thanks for reading,Áine xBABY STEPS WITH ÁINE: THE FOURTH TRIMESTER was last modified: May 21st, 2016 by Mark ForkerShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:ÁineBaby BlogBaby StepsFeaturesFourth Trimesternewslast_img read more

first_imgTWO thugs who stamped a Co Donegal man to death outside his home were branded brutal and merciless by a judge who told them they must serve at least 16 years for the killingAsif Rehman and Adel Ishaq, top left and Asif Rehman on the right killed Malin Head labourer William McKeeney, 57, near his Glasgow home.Lord Uist told the killers: “It is a shocking indictment of the state of our society that an innocent man should be murdered in a public street, outside his own home, in this manner. “Senseless violence of this kind must be suppressed.“For no reason whatsoever, he was set upon in the street by you two when he had almost reached his home and subjected to a brutal and merciless attack which robbed him of his life.”Rehman and Ishaq, both 20, have records of violence. They were hyped up on drink and drugs. They were out looking for trouble. A nine-day trial in Kilmarnock heard that Inishowen man William had been for a Saturday night out at the pub.Just after midnight, he headed to his home in Pollokshields, Glasgow, carrying a fish supper. He was confronted by Rehman and Ishaq who called him “a white c**t” before launching a vicious attack.William’s partner Annemarie Newlands, 48, said she was watching from her window for his return. She looked out to see two Asian men stamping on something. She thought they were breaking up furniture. But when she went into the street, she found her boyfriend. His head bore the marks left by his attackers’ shoes.Ishaq and Rehman, both from Pollokshields, were found guilty of murder. An allegation that the attack on January 15 was racially motivated was deleted from the charge. The trial heard that a plan by Rehman and Ishaq to flee the country was foiled by the local Asian community, who turned them in. The case prompted a protest outside the High Court in Edinburgh yesterday by a small group from the far-right Scottish Defence League, who hurled insults at friends of the two accused.Extra police were on duty in and outside the building.Gordon Jackson QC, for Rehman, told the court the assault had not been planned. “It was a spontaneous and very horrible act that happened for no good reason.” Derek Ogg QC, said Ishaq was remorseful and said no weapon had been involved. Lord Uist retorted: “A shod foot was the weapon.”The court heard the kicks and stamps ruptured blood vessels in William’s abdomen and he died in hospital three hours later.Sentencing the killers, Lord Uist said: “You walked away, leaving him lying in the roadway in a critical condition and callously did nothing to help him.” The judge also told Rehman that a background report made “grim reading” and noted that his convictions for violence began when he was just 15.At the time of the attack, he was on bail – which added three months to his 16-year sentence.16 YEARS FOR THUGS WHO KICKED DONEGAL MAN TO DEATH was last modified: November 12th, 2012 by BrendaShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:16 YEARS FOR THUGS WHO KICKED DONEGAL MAN TO DEATHlast_img read more

first_imgI know we need the rain, but “c’mon man!”It’s getting a little discouraging, especially for steelhead anglers hoping to fish somewhere other than the Smith or Chetco.Since early January, each time Humboldt rivers started to turn green, another round of storms blew through and turned them all back to brown. Redwood Creek, the Mad, Van Duzen, and South Fork Eel — all were headed towards emerald green this week. But now with rain in the forecast for at least the next week, we’ll be …last_img read more

Double-stud walls use affordable and environmentally appropriate materials to achieve a high R-value.The classic double-stud wall is made up of two parallel 2×4 walls with a space between them. If the framers leave a 5-inch space between the two rows of studs, this type of wall provides room for 12 inches of insulation — for example, dense-packed cellulose, blown-in fiberglass, or mineral wool. There are variations on this theme; for example, the wall can be thinner (9 inches is possible) or thicker (perhaps 16 inches). Instead of two rows of 2x4s, some double-stud walls have a 2×6 structural wall paired with a parallel 2×4 wall.Every now and then, an enthusiastic builder will suggest an “improvement” to the double-stud wall: namely, a layer of exterior rigid foam insulation (see Image #2, below). While this layer of exterior foam might (intuitively) seem like a good idea, in fact it is usually a very bad idea. Encouraging a wall to dry to the exterior Traditionally, cold-climate walls have been designed to dry to the exterior. In a cold climate, the moisture drive during the winter is from the interior of the house toward the exterior. The interior air is warm and moist, while the exterior air is cool and dry. Under these conditions, moisture will move by diffusion from the interior toward the exterior. (For more information on this process, see All About Vapor Diffusion.)If the double-stud wall has plywood or OSB sheathing on the exterior and painted drywall on the interior, moisture tends to diffuse through the drywall and the wall insulation toward the exterior sheathing during the winter. Because the exterior sheathing will be cold, it will absorb moisture; in some conditions, a layer of frost may even build up on the sheathing. If the wall… This article is only available to GBA Prime Memberscenter_img Start Free Trial Already a member?
