first_imgKolkata: The sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections in Bengal witnessed high-handedness of BJP candidates, particularly from Bharati Ghosh and Dilip Ghosh. While the former IPS officer, who is the BJP candidate from Ghatal, was found barging into booths illegally with her body guards, Dilip Ghosh, who is contesting from the Midnapore seat, was found using instigating language just beside a polling booth at Rampuria Primary School at Egra. The Commission had to restrict the movement of Bharati Ghosh and seized the vehicle in which she was moving, after it was found that she did not have the necessary permission to use the car. Ghosh, who faced agitation from Trinamool Congress supporters and some common people at several booths, lost her cool and one of her security guards resorted to firing at a booth near Dogachia in Ghatal, in which one Bakhtiar Khan sustained bullet injuries. The Election Commission has initiated FIRs against Ghosh and her associates for videographing and firing in booth, while an FIR was also lodged against Dilip Ghosh, who is also the state president of the saffron party, for a clash with TMC supporters in front of a booth where he allegedly used instigating language. Voting in the sixth phase that covered four districts of Jangalmahal, namely Purulia, Bankura, West Midnapore and Jhargram, was peaceful apart from some sporadic incidents of trouble. The average voting percentage was 79.93 percent till 5 pm, which was a clear indication that people braved the sultry weather conditions and exercised their franchise. The Central Forces opened fire at five places and 26 people were injured in clashes related to elections. The police arrested 16 persons across the parliamentary constituencies that went to vote in specific cases, for incidents of violence that could have marred the peaceful voting process.last_img read more

CALGARY, Alberta — Suncor Energy Inc., Canada’s largest oil and gas company, said on Wednesday its second-quarter profit fell 69% as it took a substantial charge to account for a delayed oil sands mining project. The company, Canada’s dominant oil sands producer, reported net income of $211 million, or 14 Canadian cents per share, down from $680 million, or 45 Canadian cents, in the second quarter of 2013.The result included a $718 million non-cash charge to account for its share in the Joslyn Oil Sands Project, which was mothballed by partner Total SA earlier this year. It also wrote down the value of its Libyan assets by $297 million and booked a $223 charge for oil sands assets that no longer fit into the company’s future plans while recording $314 million in gains. | Adjusted earnings, which exclude most one-time items, rose 18% to $1.14 billion, or 77 Canadian cents per share, from $934 million, or 62 Canadian cents. The adjusted result lagged the average analyst forecast for the measure of 97 Canadian cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.Suncor is ramping up its production from the world’s third-largest crude oil reserve. It said output from its northern Alberta operations rose 37% to 378,800 barrels per day due to less maintenance in the quarter and increasing production from its Firebag thermal oil sands operations. However, it said it has cut its capital spending budget by $1 billion, to $6.8 billion, as it plans lower-than-forecast spending on its oil sands projects and at its Libyan operations, due to political unrest in the North African country. In total, the company produced 518,400 barrels of oil equivalent per day, up from 500,100 boepd in the year-prior quarter.Cash flow, a key indicator of the company’s ability to pay for new projects and drilling, rose to $2.41 billion, or $1.64 per share, from $2.25 billion, or $1.49.Along with its Alberta oil sands projects, Suncor produces oil off Canada’s east coast, in the North Sea and elsewhere. It also owns refineries in Canada and the United States. The company’s shares closed at $445.79 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Wednesday.© Thomson Reuters 2014 read more

Condemning the murder of yet another Russian journalist, the head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has underscored the vital role of a free and independent media in upholding democracy.NTV television reporter Ilya Zimin was found dead in his apartment in Moscow at the end of last month, his body showing clear signs of violent struggle, as did the state of his apartment, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).Mr Zimin, who won the Best TV Reporter prize of the Russian Television Academy in 2002, worked for an investigative programme on NTV, a broadcaster owned by the state oil company Gazprom. The CPJ reports that at least 12 journalists have been murdered in Russia since 2000. “Free and independent media, both print and broadcast, play an essential role in upholding democracy and rule of law,” UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura said in a statement. “Attacks against journalists therefore undermine society as a whole.“I am very concerned about reports of violence against journalists in Russia but place full confidence in the authorities’ determination to investigate these crimes and bring their perpetrators to trial,” he added. UNESCO is the only UN agency with a mandate to defend freedom of expression and press freedom, and Mr. Matsuura has issued frequent condemnations of the murder of journalists around the world in recent months. read more

first_imgGartner has finished collecting data on mobile phone sales and market share for the first quarter of 2011, and while no one expected Android to slow down, few people expected the platform to pick up as much steam as it has.Android devices now make up over 36 percent of the mobile phone market worldwide, with 36.27 million devices shipping in Q1 alone. The only other company to enjoy significant growth was Apple. The iPhone moved up to 16.8 percent of all mobile phones worldwide, nearly double its market share from a year ago.The rest of the numbers look bad for their respective companies. Sales of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 flagged, topping only 1.6 million devices of the total 3.66 million mobile phones that run a Microsoft operating system. That 3.66 million is a big number, but it actually represents a sharp decline from a year ago, from 6.8 percent of overall global mobile share to 3.6 percent. Most analysts point to a lack of manufacturer interest in Windows Phone 7 as the root of Microsoft’s dropping market share in the mobile space: developers are interested in the platform, and many customers are too, but the handset manufacturers simply haven’t lined up.This may be one reason why Murtazin calculated that only 674,000 Windows Phones had been sold, adding fuel to the rumor mill that Microsoft may want to pick up a mobile manufacturer of its own, like Nokia. Microsoft already has a partnership with Nokia to start producing Windows Phones, but that partnership likely won’t bear fruit until 2012 at the earliest. Neither company has officially said when their first Windows Phones will reach the market.Research in Motion (RIM,) makers of the BlackBerry, also took a heavy tumble, largely due to Android’s rise. RIM fell behind Android, Symbian, and iOS as the fourth major mobile OS worldwide. To put the drop in perspective, it was number two a year ago, second only to Symbian. Speaking of Symbian, Nokia’s now discarded mobile OS completely choked in the past year, shedding close to half its market share and tumbling from the top spot. It’s still second globally, but the trend doesn’t look good. What’s certain, however, is that the global market for mobile phones is looking more and more like the US market, when just over a year ago the two were almost incomparable. Android and iOS have enjoyed major gains both in the United States and abroad over the past year, and the old guard – Symbian, BlackBerry, and Windows Mobile, have all suffered because of it.Read more at Gartner, via Electronista and Boy Genius Reportlast_img read more

Mr Been’s programme, which was split between London and Edinburgh, included numerous meetings with officials that focused on how the Electoral Commission could assist the Integrity Commission in carrying out its mandate. He also had the opportunity to observe the live monitoring and checking of proposed political expenditure carried out by the Electoral Commission, and met with both the Electoral Commissioner for Scotland and the Head of Election Team for the Scottish Government.‘It was fascinating to be able to spend time with the Electoral Commission’s officials in the run-up to the Scottish referendum on independence on 18 September,’ commented Mr Been on his return. ‘I will be looking to apply what I learned during my visit to my work for the Integrity Commission as we strive towards ensuring TCI is a regional model of political transparency and accountability.’Deputy Head of Mission at the Governor’s Office, Mr. Patrick Boyle, commented: ‘I’m very pleased that we have once again been able to fund capacity building activities that will be of real benefit to the TCI. The UK’s commitment to good governance in the Islands continues, and the Integrity Commission plays a key role in achieving this locally. I hope Mr Been’s visit will herald the beginning of a strong working relationship with the UK’s Electoral Commission.’The Integrity Commission of the TCI is, among other things, charged with oversight of the Political Activities Ordinance of the Islands. This governs the activities (financing, campaigning etcetera) of political parties and independent candidates during the four-year cycle of elections, and particularly the twelve month period prior to a General Election. The Ordinance draws in fair measure from its counterpart legislation in the UK, and specifies donation and spending limits as well as who can or cannot donate to a political party. The Ordinance also defines the enforcement powers and sanctions which can be implemented if there is a breach by any of the political parties.ENDlast_img read more

Emme Hall/Roadshow For those on the hunt for frugality and function, Ford believes it may have just the SUV to fit the bill. That is the 2020 Explorer Hybrid, which the EPA has finally provided fuel economy estimates for.Forbes first reported on the fuel economy estimates on Wednesday and the government said the 2020 Explorer Hybrid will muster 27 miles per gallon city, 29 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined. That’s for rear-wheel drive models, mind you. Across large portions of the US where winter is a thing, the Explorer Hybrid with all-wheel drive will return an estimated 23/26/25 mpg.For some comparison, the RWD model boasts a 4 mpg better rating compared to the Explorer’s standard 2.3-liter turbo-4 engine. For AWD models, the Hybrid manages to be 2 mpg more frugal. While that may not sound like a huge difference, Ford did tell us during our first drive of the Explorer Hybrid that the SUV should go about 500 miles between fill-ups. That’s a stat many families will likely love to hear.Power for the hybrid model comes from a 3.3-liter V6 married to a 1.5-kilowatt-hour battery and 35-kilowatt electric motor. There’s no pure electric mode, rather, the Explorer Hybrid simply operates in the most efficient setting at all times. Drivers won’t hear a peep or hum when crawling around parking lots, but the engine will fire up when the driver gets up to speed. When needed, 318 horsepower and 322 pound-feet of torque are on tap. Those are slightly higher figures than the turbocharged 2.3-liter’s 300 hp and 310 pound-feet of torque. While the Explorer Hybrid is the more efficient of the SUV’s portfolio, it falls short of the standard bearer: the Toyota Highlander Hybrid. The current model will return an estimated 28 mpg combined with standard AWD. The next model is expected to be even more efficient as it moves from V6 power to an inline-4 engine. So, where does Ford see a play for hybrid sales? Towing. The Explorer Hybrid is rated to tow 5,000 pounds. Toyota’s electrified Highlander will do just 3,500 pounds. SUVs Hybridslast_img read more

Prothom Alo File PhotoBNP vice-chairman Khandker Mahbub Hossain on Friday urged their party leaders and activists to heat up the streets to have their chairperson Khaleda Zia freed from jail, reports UNB.”It would be very tough to free Khaleda Zia through a normal legal process as the government has destroyed all the institutions, including the judiciary. I personally don’t believe we’ll be able to have her released from jail depending on the rule of law,” he said.Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader further said, “The only way to free her is to heat up the street. Until we do it, we won’t be able to have Khaleda Zia released from jail. So, let’s get united and wage a movement to free her.”Nagorik Odhikar Andolon Forum arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club, demanding the release of all political prisoners, including Khaleda Zia.Khaleda has been in jail since 8 February last year as she was convicted in two graft cases.Mahbub, also one of the counsels of Khaleda, said the BNP chairperson was arrested out of government’s political vengeance with a political motive. “So, it is not possible to have her freed without the government’s goodwill.”He called upon the leaders of BNP and the Jatiya Oikya Front to launch a movement on a single issue of Khaleda’s release.Mahbub also questioned the justification of BNP’s decision to join the 11th parliamentary elections keeping Khaleda in jail.”We took part in the election depending on democracy-loving people without freeing Khaleda Zia. (Photo by Brianna McAdoo)The “Black Panther” costume worn by Chadwick Boseman (King T’Challa/The Black Panther) was constructed of 3-D printed flexible materials. Rhea Combs, curator of Film and Photography and head of the Earl W. and Amanda Stafford Center for African American Media Arts both at NMAAHC, shared her knowledge about the construction of the costume.“I do know the mask is 3-D printed nylon…It has some velcro on it, it has some nylon, it has some various types of plastic. It’s about an eight piece suit when you think about the shoes, the gloves, the double body suit, that’s like the pants and the top so you have a variety of different elements that make up the Black Panther.”The iconic “Black Panther” suit was conceptualized by comic book artist and illustrator Andy Park. The design itself was executed by the award winning costume designer, Judianna Makovsky. The African American museum hosted over 80 films at their debut African American Film Fest which took place from October 24 through October 28. As part of the film festival’s mission to, “showcase historical and contemporary time-based media works highlighting African American and African diasporic experiences”, the “Black Panther” costume made a one night appearance on Thursday October 24.Have no fear, Curator Rhea Combs shared that the costume would be apart of the museum’s permanent collection, but did not have further details about when it would be exhibited as the museum is currently figuring out methods to preserve the costume. Combs went on to highlight the significance of the costume being featured in the film festival,  “we think that it’s important to have on display during the film festival because the film festival is really about showcasing black excellence in all its variety of ways.”When asked, why “Black Panth”er is just as worthy of celebration as other celebrated Marvel films like Spiderman and Batman, Combs told the AFRO, “When you think about the history of superheroes and comics, African Americans have really not been sort of the main… This one is different in the fact that its unapologetic about the fact that the superhero, the protagonist, the main character is African, is unapologetically Black and I think  that…you can’t deny that as a significant moment in a history when people have been erased,” she said. For more information about the African American Museum of History & Culture and their upcoming events, exhibits, visit https://nmaahc.si.edu.last_img read more

But today at our education company, Learn Capital, I’m now seeing our portfolio reach 150 million viewers. That’s a million times more reach through connected technology.Related: 3 Tech Startups That Are Reinventing K-12 EducationIndeed, there has never been a better time to be a pioneer in education technology: In 2014 U.S. edtech venture funding was nearly $2 billion; and while some investors fear we may be entering an edtech bubble, I’m not as worried. Of course there is inherent risk when a market sees a sharp rise in investment dollars; and not everyone will make money. However, disruption in the education and learning market is in its infancy and cries out for further innovation. Following are a few key reasons why entrepreneurs should focus their efforts on disrupting the education market and getting a piece of the proverbial $4.6 trillion pie.1. Demand for learning is exploding. The demand for learning is insatiable and compounding. It is commonly known that society’s most educated people are also its most rigorous learners. So, it should come as no surprise that the most literate societies are the ones who learn the most. That’s why tertiary education is being sought out by greater numbers here in the United States and the world’s more educated nations. Advanced education has become more commonplace and affordable; and companies are offering more rigorous training to meet their needs for an innovative and technology-driven workforce.Additionally, there is growing sophistication among parents, who in turn are positively reinforcing their children’s education. This trend is fueling a life-long demand for continued education — so much so that educational supply does not meet demand; and that gap is growing.  2. Educational demands for flexibility are not yet being met.As the average person becomes more sophisticated in his or her educational endeavors, the demand for continued learning has outpaced supply. Until recently, when the internet really started to work its magic, those who wanted to learn had to:1. Go to a school.2. Go to a school near their parents’ or own home.3. Consider campus options — especially if they had top-notch academic skills and were financially well off.Related: 4 Ways Technology Is Making Education More Affordable and AvailableAll such forms of learning involved an instructor and a library, and that was pretty much it. Today, more than ever before, learners demand more availability and lower costs.3. Capital is readily available.A flood of “interested” capital is now available. Our company receives several emails a week from investors seeking a first investment opportunity or a further investment into the education space. Not all companies will receive funding, of course, but there are a huge number of investors looking for new opportunities. Additionally, investable companies will see great terms and have an ever-increasing choice of investors to choose from.  4. It has never been cheaper to start a company. In an interesting experiment, TheNextWeb asked software development firms how much it would cost to build the products currently driving billions of dollars in the education space. Surprisingly, the finding was that companies like Twitter could be built in less than a full working day, with initial costs as low as hundreds of thousands of dollars. That’s not bad considering that entrepreneurs in the ed space are receiving $10 million-plus dollar valuations in Seed and Series A rounds.  5. The processes for starting a company have become widely known. The knowledge behind lean startups, customer development and the how-to’s of raising rounds of capital has become easily accessible. There was a point in time where such knowledge was a combination of industry secrets. Now, though, the tools to start a business are a popular commodity and widely available in popular books by authors such as Eric Reis, Steve Blank and Brad Feld, as well as on various blogs and websites. In fact, entrepreneurship is now a global trend. 6. It has never been easier to reach a wide audience.Education platforms are paving the way for companies to launch and create strong user bases quickly and affordably. For example, Edmodo has an app store that has helped launch dozens of companies and build strong user bases. Clever now allows users to integrate with school data and drive school adoption.Standing on the shoulders of the internet and mobile technologies, today’s startups can reach anyone who’s connected, with just a click. Oh, how things have changed since I stood in a classroom, teaching those high school kids. And, rest assured: As we move forward, more and more companies will show hyper-scale growth curves like those from WhatsApp, SnapChat and WeChat. You should consider joining them.Related: Will You Be the Next Great Education-Tech Entrepreneur?last_img read more

Then, they often only want to provide their solutions to customers or clients that are equally cool — favoring the few buzzy opportunities over many other unexciting ones.I know this sounds crazy. Who turns down business? But it’s true. Many tech startups have focused on splashy, slick apps of consumer convenience, rather than attending to the less visible infrastructure necessary to keep all this running. According to CB Insights, the number one reason cited by startups in postmortems was “lack of a market need” for their product. Hmm.So what are they missing? First, let’s consider the disconnect.Related: How to Get Your First Big Win in BusinessSure, it’s exciting to see yourself helping someone disrupt an entire industry. But most technology solutions get applied to mundane things in everyday businesses — the kind of clients that may “merely” want to reinvigorate a supply chain, find a more efficient way to root out product defects, or improve a routine customer experience. Or maybe they want to pump new life into old lines of business or ignite new growth in a mature business. For technology solutions, no matter how cool, that is where much of the market lies. And the market will only grow larger. More and more companies are realizing that technology can revive old businesses and can create new opportunities in existing businesses. My colleagues and I studied over 1,300 companies in major industries and found that the most successful of these — roughly 100 — are actively doing this. They’re applying technology-led innovation to both their mature and current businesses, as well as their new ventures. Still, most of the 1,300 fail to identify all the mundane, bland, but potentially profitable ways to apply new technologies. For tech companies that are willing to support this boring stuff, a valuable cycle awaits: They can help established brands today, fueling the innovations that become the brands’ core business tomorrow.Related: What It Takes to Grow a Little Company Founded on a Big VisionConsider a potential tech client like Uniqlo, the global fast fashion retailer. Management experts have been telling retailers to shed stores, inventory, and where possible, employees in order to compete with e-commerce competitors. But Uniqlo is determined to make the most of a very old business — selling clothes in shopping malls. Instead of abandoning its core retail assets, the company is redesigning them to accommodate the latest in digital technology and digitally savvy customers. At the same time, they are making major technology investments in automated factories that lower inventory costs and allow more relevant products. The company is positioning itself for the future while making existing assets more valuable — and providing exciting challenges to their providers of technology solutions. If you’re a tech entrepreneur, the lesson from companies like Uniqlo and the hundreds like them in other industries is clear. Make your cool solutions applicable in every phase of a customer’s business, as it continually evolves.Related: Could These Companies Be the Next $1 Billion Unicorns? How? Start by asking yourself how much you really know about product production, or how familiar you are with processes in various service industries.
