first_imgA motorcyclist who was travelling along the Ituni Trail, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), is now the country’s latest road fatality after his motorcycle collided with a car on Saturday evening.The car that was involved in the accidentThe dead man has been identified as 47-year-old Godfrey Willis of Goat Farm, Ituni.Based on reports received, at about 19:00h, a mechanic of Kwakwani Park, Berbice River, Upper Demerara, was driving his motorcar (PPP 651) proceeding East on the Northern side of the Ituni Trail while Willis was riding motorcycle CG 8386 in the opposite direction.However, Willis’ motorcycle, which did not have its headlamps on at the time, slammed into the front side of the car and as a result, the motorcyclist fell onto the road where he received several injuries about his body.He was taken to the Ituni Health Centre but was pronounced dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.The motorcycle that Willis was riding at the time of his demiseAccording to the police, both of the vehicles involved in the fatal accident were lodged at the Ituni Police Station, and the driver of the car is presently in Police custody assisting with the investigation.Willis is the third person and second motorcyclist to lose his life on the roadways in Guyana for the month of December.Just six days ago, on Tuesday, December 3, 18-year-old cyclist, Deshon Morris lost his life while his pillion rider was injured after the motorcycle that they were riding collided with a truck at Industrial Estate, Ruimveldt, Greater Georgetown.Morris, of Lot 4 East La Penitence, Georgetown, was pronounced dead on the spot while Keon Granville, 27, of Phase 2 Lot 1 East Ruimveldt, was treated and sent away.Based on information received, the accident occurred at about 20:00h and involved motorcycle CJ 6021 and motor lorry bearing registration number GTT 2073 with trailer number TEE 6391 owned by Muneshwers Limited.Police preliminary reports stated that the motorcycle was proceeding north and as the truck approached the intersection near the National Hardware store, the driver failed to stop.As such, the vehicle ended up in the path of the motorcycle. As a result of the collision, both Morris and Granville fell onto the roadway and received injuries about their bodies. Morris was subsequently pronounced dead.On Sunday, December 1, a pedestrian identified as 39-year-old Romel Carter of D Field South Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was killed after being hit by a truck that was allegedly speeding along the Leonora Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD).Guyana Times understands that the truck driver reportedly picked up Carter and took him to the hospital for treatment but upon realising that the pedestrian was dead; the driver attempted to flee the cops by jumping into his truck and driving away.However, according to Police Commander of Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), Assistant Commissioner of Police, Simon McBean, the truck driver had two passengers inside of his truck at the time of the accident who made contact with law enforcement officials to notify them that the man was guilty of the crime.Additionally, an ex-police officer who had been passing the area when the fatal accident took place, gave the police enough information that led to the truck driver’s arrest.Meanwhile, in the month of November, 15 accidents resulted in the deaths of 21 persons inclusive of three children.
