US backs Sri Lanka in its efforts to address reconciliation issues

Biswal said that as the Sri Lankan Government moves forward with its plans for constitutional reforms the US will look to encourage investments to the country. “The US has welcomed the deepening of the ties between our two countries. The US and Sri Lanka share common goals. We are partners and today our relations are at an all time high,” she added. The United States today said it was committed to partner with Sri Lanka as the country moves ahead with its post war reconciliation process.Visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal told reporters that much work remains to be done in Sri Lanka but the US is ready to assist the country to reach its true potential. Malinowski said that Sri Lanka has an interest in peace and the US will support the efforts to achieve that goal. (Colombo Gazette) “We can envision a future which brings benefits to both countries,” she added.Speaking earlier following talks with Biswal and US Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Tom Malinowski, Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera said that US –Sri Lanka ties are at a historical high. He said that at the meeting with the top US officials several matters were discussed including providing an economic peace dividend for the people of Sri Lanka.Malinowski meanwhile said that the Sri Lankan Government has taken very concrete steps in its reform and reconciliation agenda.He thanked the Sri Lankan Government for the efforts it has taken and reiterated that the US will give Sri Lanka economic support which will help the reconciliation process. “What is happening in Sri Lanka is so important to people around the world,” he added taking note of the conflicts taking place in other countries at a time Sri Lanka is rebuilding after 30 years of war.
